We entered this quarter still engaged in recovery
activities from the two floods (bit more debt).
We took on temp staff to help resettle children missing school after
loss of Nuevo Jerusalen School We delivered keys to completed community
house. Then sadly lost our 2nd oldest associate through retirement.
Will miss him, our budget will too (by up to 1/3). And then there
were a few rays of light shown thru.
|
The
ASK School, at Porvenir, reopened three weeks after the last flood.
Helping chldren whose homes flooded will require more time. For
now, reading, writing learninig, eating, playing, growing go on
as before.

farewell "ASK"
UK
Action for Street Kids
Now it's just ASK Pe. |
ASK UK has
been a faithful & fun associate these10 years; helping meet
our budget. Bruce did the heavy lifting by turning over the proceeds
of a modest inheritance to fund the schools. Now, with the trust
depleted and ASK UK closed; we let the projects in Colombia and
Ecuador be taken over by local NGOs: while we now concentrate on
keeping the Peru school open. Our funds now come from Bruce's pension,
Nicole's monthly donations & drafts against our personal credit
cards, which is adding $2,000 a month to our debt. If we can just
keep going thru Christmas to February, there is a good chance a
Spanish charity will take over the Peru School: assuring its future.
Do help us make this happen.
|
This summer we will be getting in touch with friends, family &
some of our best volunteers: to ask your help in pushing our crowd
funding project over the top.

1 SCHOOL ...........................BUILD

|
The new school term was going smoothly
when, in March, torrential rains arrived on the Pacific coast of
Peru [the long awaited feared "El Niño" effect].
With it came two powerful life changing floods.
|
|
The
torrents filled Alt Trujillo school with more than a tone of sand
& took away parts of the roof. Still, we reopened within two
weeks.
Nuevo Jerusalen School, saly was lost. Worst of all the plastic
and reed shanty homes of our children where largely washed away.
We decide to rebuild the largest of them in solid materials (cement/bricks)

Bruce
& Ana Tere got to know some seriously motivated people en route
to
Santiago de Compostela.
In recent years the business phenomenon known as Voluntourism
seems to have attracted people who would normally have come to our
projects. And since talented, motivated volunteers have largely
been responsible for our success in getting street kids educated
(and destitute mothers self employed): Bruce completed his own walk
to Santiago together with Ana Tere,
in part to meet potential volunteers.

We must also provide

help with their community

have teachers, directors
social workers,

JUNE
2014: Our Fathers
Day fetes with one mostly missing
ingredient. Acknowledging valued partners, colleagues, staff
(with the tenure of each).
|
JULY
2014:
Before the mid winter break (25/07 to 11/08) 400 at-risk kids
had been abducted from the streets of Trujillo. Then it stopped.
The gang moved on? We´re delighted with bi wkly reports.
Community Reading Room/Literacy Centre redecorated and reopened
over the holiday period.
|
AUGUST
2014:
On
return from holiday we celebrated 5th anniversary of ASK school
+a few birthdays. Current dental clinics were particularly useful.
Regular visits to children we have placed in care. Back to school.
Thank heavens our kids are safe again..

February
2014:
The second month of the new term began with a couple of unique
challenges: Delicias (our largest campus) needed a complete refurbishment.
The school we bought in Nuevo Jeruslaen had a secret mortgage:
we rushed back into rented premises. Only Alto Trujillo (repainted)
remained normal.
|
March/April
2014
In March the second term settled in. Ana Tere brought back onto
the team Rosa Ascoy (Social Worker, Project Director, Teacher)
to run Delicias. She also employed two additional Social Workers
to rotate between the schools, and work with children and families
outside of the classroom setting - also to keep up help and pressure
on behalf of Victoria and other special cases.
|
May
2014:
By
May everything had settled in (apart from having to move Nuevo
Jerusalen yet again. Ahh yes, Bruce will buy us a place as soon
as he gets back). Mothers Day, well taught classes and first semi-monthly
report from social workers, help.

November
2013:
The year ended with more children than usual passing on to State
Schools, while others graduated because we had taken them as far
as they wanted to go. The
increase
in numbers
was due to our adding new classes in two of the shanty schools.
|
December
2013
Immediately followed the annual Christmas celebration, which for
our dear children brings the joy of a party the likes of which
they had not known before joining us. It also includes the sadness
of parting - some have been with us in these tiny schools for
years. ´By way of supplies and moral support we will continue
to help you when you are gone from here to the next place´.
Adieu.

January
2014:
A
day after the Christmas party and completion of the 2013 main
term, social workers, teachers and assistants hit the dirt tracks
and back streets, knocking at temporary shelters recruiting children
for the January term, 2014.

Sept - October 2013: We have just been notified of good fortune
- not ours
but rather children we are yet to locate, then nourish and put
into our Peruvian shanty schools; for those schools are as of
now fully accredited institutions of formal education,
both secondary and primary: saith the Minister
of Education.
|
To honour the elevated status granted to our humble
schools we are now seeking an appropriate property in Nuevo Jerusalen,
to purchase and there install a two room school to rival our ASK
School in Alto Trujillo.
|
Boy on hold: Juan was born 21 years ago. His mother could see there
was something wrong so she never register his birth, got an ID,
medical help nor put him in school. We found Juan 3 months ago
(at last).
|
|
| | | Out
of the blue a lady from the Ministery of |
Education rang up to say we are being accredited.
| Then
a nice man turned up with certificates, visited classes: a foto op. | We got him documented & paid
for a CT scan. Juan now receives epilepsy medication & attends our school. |
July - August 2013...to Those of you who follow us know that for the past
several months we have been preoccupied with opening yet anther class for out-of-school
kids in the Northern Peru city of Trujillo. This week it all came together: new
teacher, Elena Cruzado, new group of local recruiters & new kids. |
It's now mid-winter in South America. No
snow will fall on the Pacific coastal plane but to locals it still feels cold
enough to have to bundle up.
